Synopsis and final CD
The final synopsis (per our discussion during your final review) and the final (2) CD's can be brought to my desk in Avery 600 North. I have already recieved a number of these from you, but since there was some confusion, it will be fine to bring the material to my desk by this Friday 1 pm. Please be sure to include the cd's and give us you're presentation in its original format (indesign, powerpoint, etc) as well as the pdf version.
Also, to piggyback onto this posting a big thanks to all of you for your efforts this semester. I feel lucky to have been able to participate with you all and wanted to thank you for including me in your thought process and experience in the program. I'm looking forward to hearing about your next pursuits (Paris, home university, working, etc) whatever it may be. See you all soon, and definitely at the final dinner!
Best,
Amy

fantastic
'Literary' texts no more?
Project reduces classic works to text messages
LONDON, England (AP) -- "Romeo, Romeo -- wher4 Rt thou Romeo?"
It could be the future of Shakespeare.
Dot mobile, a British mobile phone service aimed at students, says it plans to condense classic works of literature into SMS text messages. The company claims the service will be a valuable resource for studying for exams.
Academic purists will be horrified. Hamlet's famous query, "To be or not to be, that is the question," becomes "2b? Nt2b? ???"
John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" begins "devl kikd outa hevn coz jelus of jesus&strts war." ("The devil is kicked out of heaven because he is jealous of Jesus and starts a war.")
Some may dismiss the summaries as cheat notes for the attention-deficit generation, but John Sutherland, a University College London English professor who consulted on the project, said they could act as a useful memory aid.
"The educational opportunities it offers are immense," said Sutherland, who chaired the judging panel for this year's Booker Prize for fiction.
Sutherland said the compressed nature of text messages allowed them to "fillet out the important elements in a plot."
"Take for example the ending to Jane Eyre -- 'MadwyfSetsFyr2Haus.' (Mad wife sets fire to house.) Was ever a climax better compressed?"
But political commentator and author Oliver Kamm said the terse texts were "more than a travesty."
"What you lose with text messaging in literature is what makes literature what it is -- the imagery, the irony, the nuance," he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio.
"What I fear will happen with text versions of Shakespeare is that students will be encouraged not to read the books but to settle for something else, and people don't need excuses not to read books. They don't read enough as it is."
Books planned for the service include Charles Dickens' "Bleak House," whose tale of the interminable legal suit of Jarndyce and Jarndyce is reduced to a few snappy lines, and Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," which describes hunky Mr. Darcy as "fit&loadd" (handsome and wealthy).
Dot mobile said it planned to launch the service in January, with Shakespeare's complete works available by April. The texts will be free to subscribers to the company's phone service.

advice from today's critics on refining our presentations
keep moving forwards with each page: don't get stuck in just one place
think about your audience: remember that they haven't seen the entire process -- they aren't familiar with what we're doing
MODELS:
use the different media to focus the discussion,
make sure the models support your argument and are actually related to what you're saying
think about operational models: showing the relationship between the parts of your project
think about models as installations, toys, games, animations, etc

ah, cell phones ......
"Wildlife researchers in Kenya and South Africa have put no-frills cell phones in weatherproof cases on a collar that goes around an elephant's neck. The phone sends a message every hour, revealing the animal's whereabouts.
It cuts the cost of tracking wildlife by up to 60 percent, said Professor Wouter van Hoven of the University of Pretoria's Center for Wildlife Management.
"You don't have to walk around the bush searching for the animals," he says. "I have sat around in Europe and was able to monitor animals in the mountains using a cell phone that had access to the Internet."
HOWEVER --- .... what's the difference between that, and just a regular tracking device like they've been using for years?

BRYANT PARK: thoughts on cell phone usage

a snippet of what Jui and I discussed following our Bryant Park exercise, during which we used our cell phone as props and as technology:
as props to help us invade peoples' space ("who pays attention to someone on a cell phone?")
as technology to communicate the situations ("..isn't background noise just as relevant....?")
